Gimp Trims

Gimp trim is a narrow, flat, woven or braided passementerie used to cover upholstery tack lines, finish raw edges, and provide a clean, decorative transition between upholstered fabric and the wooden frame of a chair, sofa, or bench. At The WorkRoom, our gimp collection spans narrow flat trims in a wide range of colours and constructions from leading passementerie brands.

How Gimp Is Used

Gimp's primary application is covering the tack line in traditionally-upholstered furniture — the row of tacks or staples that holds the fabric at the edge of the frame, which is typically masked by a narrow strip of gimp applied with glue or hand-stitching. In traditionally-finished upholstery, the gimp represents the final and most visible finishing element — a narrow strip whose colour and construction quality signals the overall quality of the upholstery work. Gimp is also used decoratively to create definition at upholstery seams, at chair rail lines, and as narrow decorative banding on furniture and drapery panels. Width ranges from approximately 3/8" to 1" — proportionally narrow to serve its function without imposing on the fabric's visual field.
