When Schumacher partnered with textile experts, Jill Lasersohn, to create a toile collection based on her impressive personal archive, the mutual goal was to honor the past but to also break some rules. Discover the intriguing history of this age old textile with staying power, and how a little creative license from Schumacher can make it as modern as ever.
CHARIOT OF DAWN TOILE
This room-wrapping panoramic mural, a reinterpretation of a neoclassical toile from the 1780s, stretches across six panels and features an action-packed parade of mythological scenes, from Apollo driving his four-horse chariot to Daphne morphing into a tree. At its center are seven statuesque zephyrs whose arresting beauty will steal the show.

Fabrics in toile prints. Patterns that have a meadow’s worth of songbirds, butterflies, blooming branches, and seed pods intermingle on this bucolic pattern, recast from a circa-1820 toile. For a tongue-in-cheek take on antiquity, Schumacher's artists modernized an 18th-century Jean-Baptiste Huët pattern Les Scenes Contemporaines by seamlessly embedding playful contemporary references—everything from combat boots to to-go coffee cups—into Greco-Roman mythological vignettes of Athena, Diana, and Mercury.
